Jose Mourinho has admitted that he is not too sure what Eric Dier’s best position is, but suggested that the Tottenham Hotspur man has the potential to thrive as a central defender, in comments reported by Football London.
Dier has been a real conundrum for Spurs for some time. The England international has struggled to hold down a position in defence or midfield after previously being a stalwart for club and country.
He was used a centre-back in a back three at the weekend. And despite Spurs’ defeat, his performance was lauded by Mourinho, in comments also reported by Football London.
Interestingly however, Mourinho made an admission when discussing what Dier’s best position may actually be.
“I don’t know, I don’t know,” he said, as reported by Football London. “Of course he comes from my country and before he came to Tottenham I knew about him and that his formation was shared between the two positions. And then I knew the highlight of his career in this club was playing as a No 6. A No 6 was also where he came an England player, playing in the top competitions.
“But let’s see, I think he has the potential to be a central defender – and of course the feelings of the players are very important. It’s much better for a coach and for a player to be coincident in their feelings. At this moment I am very happy with his performance – I will give him the opportunity in the future to play as a centre-back with a back four.”
TBR View – Huge boost for Spurs if Mourinho inspires Dier turnaround
It would be a huge boost for Tottenham if Mourinho can get the best out of Dier. He has struggled to rediscover his best form from a few years ago.
But at 26, he has more than enough time to turn his fortunes around dramatically. And Mourinho clearly has a lot of faith in his ability.
It was potentially a big statement to use Dier and leave the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen on the bench at the weekend.
And Dier will be hoping to repay Mourinho’s faith in the coming months. It would certainly be fantastic for Tottenham if he could.
