After a long spell of uncertainly, it appears Anthony Martial has made up his mind and wants to leave Manchester United this summer, according to comments from his agent on RMC Sport.
There were rumours that United were negotiating a new contract for the Frenchman just weeks ago, according to reports from The Sun, but after a silent period, the player’s agent Philippe Lamboley has now revealed his desire to leave Old Trafford.
Martial’s agent told RMC Sport: “After looking at all the possibilities and different factors, Anthony wants to leave Manchester United. Anthony simply wants to play, enjoy football again. The feeling with the manager will be essential.”
The promising 22-year-old will have a number of heavyweight suitors cropping up over the coming days, but Tottenham Hotspur are likely to spearhead the queue, having reportedly made Martial a priority target last month, as they attempt to bolster the supply line to Harry Kane next term.
It seems as though Martial’s absence from this year’s World Cup – having not been selected by France – is the final straw in what has been a stop-start season for the ex-Monaco forward.
Despite making a considerable contribution with 11 goals and nine assists in his 45 appearances this season, his role has often been limited to impact substitution, with his rare starts (18) ending prematurely, in favour of Marcus Rashford or Chile superstar Alexis Sanchez.
However, under the guidance of Pochettino, Martial could easily become a first team starter at White Hart Lane next season. Spurs have been screaming out for a natural wide man to complete an already impressive attack, and the Red Devil is one of the most devastating wingers in the league with the ball at his feet.
It remains to be seen whether United will consider selling Martial to a direct Premier League rival, but Pochettino is sure to test the club’s resolve in the near future.
