Journalist: Tottenham have moved to sign 'unbelievable' player, even though £13m deal was agreed elsewhere
Tottenham Hotspur moved to the front of the queue to sign Djed Spence from Middlesbrough this summer, despite a deal with Nottingham Forest all but being agreed.
Spence’s name has been one of the most talked about in the country in recent days. After winning promotion with Forest, the right-back is expected to seal a move to Spurs, who are confident they’ve won the race ahead of Forest

However, in what will be interesting news for Forest fans, Tottenham have only made their move after Forest had agreed in principle a £13m deal to bring Spence back to the City Ground. Speaking on the Football Terrace podcast, journalist Dean Jones said that the Reds had got things in place to sign Spence, only for Spurs to spoil the party.
Jones claims a £13m deal was ready to be done. However, Tottenham have come in and are now willing to pay £20m for Spence, as well as offering higher wages and the obvious lure of Champions League football.
It’s believed Antonio Conte wants to sign Spence to solve his problems at right wing-back. The Englishman’s arrival will see Emerson Royal moved out of the club, just 12 months after joining.
TBR’s View: Forest’s Loss Is Tottenham’s Gain When It Comes To Djed Spence
While this is gutting news for Nottingham Forest fans, there is no doubt Spurs are getting themselves a fine player who can only go on and get better.
Spence was superb for Forest last season in a team which dominated a lot of games. Speaking on the podcast, Jones makes a good point about how that won’t be the case next season for the Reds. It would present Spence with a new challenge, where he’d need to defend more than attack.
With Tottenham, he’ll be given license to roam down the right and, on paper anyway, looks the ideal Conte player.
