'Tottenham are ahead of Arsenal': Journalist says 'perfect' £50m forward now more likely to join Spurs

It looks as though Tottenham and Arsenal are both hoping to sign Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling this summer.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with the England international in recent months.

Meanwhile, Sterling and Spurs were being linked last summer, when Harry Kane was a target for City.

Now, a fresh link has emerged between Tottenham and the 27-year-old.

CBS football journalist Ben Jacobs spoke to The Gooner Talk YouTube channel on Tuesday afternoon.

He claimed that, rather than Arsenal, it’s Tottenham who are currently in the lead for Sterling’s signature.

“Tottenham have given him guarantees”

Jacobs claimed both Spurs and the Gunners have made pitches to the forward over what his role would be.

And Sterling reportedly prefers what Antonio Conte has offered him over what Mikel Arteta has in store for him.

“From what I gather, should he leave Manchester City, Tottenham are ahead of Arsenal in that particular pursuit,” he said.

“So if Sterling is to join Arsenal then Edu and Arteta are going to have to move quite quickly.

“I think Sterling is very intent, even though he knows Arteta very well, to play under Conte as his next manager if he is to make a move.

“The reason for that is that Tottenham have given him guarantees about style and about position.

“Tottenham’s pitch [to him] is ‘let’s get you back to doing what you do best,’ which is scoring goals.

“Arsenal’s pitch is going to be “let’s get you back to what you did at the beginning of your career” which is being a very fluid, very versatile wide player who cuts inside.

“So actually I think this is about development and what direction he’s going to head.

“I don’t think Arteta and Arsenal are prepared to tell Sterling he would join the football club and be relied upon as the main source of goals.”

“Arsenal would love to have him”

In November last year, Fabrizio Romano told The Arsenal Lounge that Arteta thinks Sterling would be “perfect” for the Gunners.

“For Sterling, it is about the contract,” said the Italian. “Man City have been clear with him – extend the contract, or we will try to sell you in January or next summer.

“It’s true, Arsenal would love to have him. Mikel Arteta is in love, he is convinced he would be perfect. Man City want more than £50million.”

Jacobs’ report is very interesting, one that’ll surely make Spurs fans rejoice and Arsenal supporters do a double take.

Sterling is a world-class player who’ll instantly make either side better, so neither side will want to lose out on him.
