Tottenham Hotspur look set to miss out on Mario Götze as Borussia Dortmund close in on a deal to re-sign their former starlet. Götze, who had been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool earlier in the summer, has reportedly been on Maruicio Pochettino’s radar in recent weeks, but it now appears that the Germany international will stay in his home country, either as a Bayern Munich player or back with his old club Dortmund.
Although no contact has been made for Götze, a move back to Dortmund appears more likely than him remaining at Bayern. New boss Carlo Ancelotti stated that he will treat the 24-year-old as a Bayern player for the time being, but with his career seemingly stalling at a pivotal moment, he needs some fresh scenery in order to get back to the heights that saw him become a national hero in 2014.
It is a shame for Spurs that their chase for the German appears to have ended. Götze would have cost them around £20 million – a snip for a player of such quality – and his experiences with Jurgen Klopp and Dortmund would have stood him in good stead for Mauricio Pochettino’s high energy style. He would have added a certain amount of X-factor to the Spurs team, especially for their upcoming Champions League campaign, but they will have to make do with other targets.
A target they may be interested in is Inter Milan’s captain and talisman Mauro Icardi. Icardi’s agent, who is famously also his wife, has revealed that Tottenham, alongside Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, are interested in the Argentine’s signature, but he also has a contract at Inter Milan to see out.
Wanda Nara, Icardi’s wife and agent, also admitted that there is no release clause in his current Inter contract, which complicates the transfer somewhat. The positive side is that there is no minimum fee for Spurs to meet, as high release clauses can sometimes deter clubs from investing in players, but the negative is that Inter are not obliged to listen to any offers for their star striker.
Icardi, who has made one cap for Argentina, all the way back in 2013, is one of Serie A’s top strikers, and has a scoring record of better than a goal every other game for Inter. He is a very intelligent, but fiery striker who deserves a crack at the Champions League, something Inter cannot offer him at the moment.
Spurs’ signing of Vincent Janssen suggests that they may not move for another striker, but whilst the Dutchman provides a similar option to Harry Kane, Icardi would offer something a little different up front for the Lilywhites. This transfer is a long shot, but it could work if Spurs are willing to push for it. One to watch over the next few weeks.
