Tottenham are set to match unwanted 111-year record even if they beat Everton

Tottenham Hotspur will face off with Everton on the final day of the season as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.

West Ham United are two points adrift of Roberto De Zerbi’s side with a 12-worse goal difference, meaning a draw is almost certainly enough for Spurs to avoid the drop.

However, even if Tottenham win on Sunday, they can still finish no higher than 17th, meaning they will have ended consecutive top-flight campaigns in 17th or below for the first time since the 1910s.

Tottenham finishing top-flight season 17th or below again

The Lilywhites achieved European success in 2024/25, but their Premier League campaign was poor.

Under Ange Postecoglou, they finished 17th on 38 points, the same total they are sitting on ahead of facing Everton.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest are one place above them this term, but already have a five-point lead over the Londoners, meaning they cannot be caught even if they drop points and Spurs win on May 24.

In turn, this will be the first time that Tottenham have finished consecutive English top-flight seasons in 17th or below since 1915.

During a run between 1912 and 1915, Tottenham finished 17th, 17th and then 20th, eventually suffering relegation out of the old top flight in the final campaign.

Tottenham among six teams never relegated from Premier League

While the result of Sunday’s game will have no bearing on that embarrassing record, it could see Spurs relegated from the Premier League for the first time.

Since the competition was first introduced in 1992, only six teams have managed to avoid the drop in every campaign that has followed.

Tottenham are one of them, with Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Everton making up the remainder of the list.

Of said clubs, the Toffees have previously come closest to relegation, finishing 17th in 2022/23.
