Report: Tottenham now love 'brilliant' £18m Premier League centre-back, as they consider alternatives to Bastoni

Tottenham Hotspur are scrambling around in the transfer market this summer as they look to add a new defender, and Marc Guehi is a name being mentioned more and more.

Guehi, who is now part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad, enjoyed a fine season with Crystal Palace last term. He moved to Selhurst Park for big money from Chelsea and has excelled under the guidance of Patrick Vieira. However, with that good form has come the admiring glances from elsewhere, including, it seems, Tottenham.

The Athletic reports today how Spurs are ‘big admirers’ of Guehi. Of course, the caveat in that report is that Guehi has four years left on his Palace contract and it’s claimed a huge bid would be needed for the Eagles to even consider doing any sort of business with Spurs.

Guehi had to bide his time for his Premier League chance but enjoyed a fine campaign with Swansea City under the watchful eye of Steve Cooper. During that year, Cooper labelled Guehi as a ‘brilliant’ player after one particular performance.

Certainly, Guehi’s progression has been rapid and it would be little surprise to see the defender end up at a Champions League club sooner, rather than later.

TBR’s View: Guehi Could Be Worth The Big Outlay For Tottenham

The price will be massive, we know that. Guehi is young, playing well for Palace and crucially, is English. That always seems to add a few more ££’s onto proceedings.

However, this could be a big buy Tottenham find some value in. Guehi is young enough to be one of their main defenders for the next decade, and when you look at it like that, even a fee of around £60-70m might not be considered over paying.

Guehi will continue to get better, too. He’s in the England camp now and Southgate likes him. So, while expensive, Tottenham might have to think hard about this one, especially with a deal for Alessandro Bastoni looking less likely.
