Tottenham and Newcastle reportedly eye player Messi said can become 'one of the best in the world' in 2018
Tottenham and Newcastle are two of a handful of clubs reportedly keen on Ousmane Dembele – a player Lionel Messi raved about three years ago.
Dembele, 24, is expected to be on the move in the near future. The 2018 World Cup winner has struggled with injuries over the last few years.
Last season, he produced 16 goal involvements in 44 games – but this season, he is yet to play a single minute. Again, he is on the sidelines.
Once costing more than £100million, Dembele is expected to leave Barcelona for nothing. His contract is about to expire, in June 2022.
Newcastle and Tottenham are among those, with the Toon staging talks. Back in 2018, Messi labelled his old teammate a “phenomenon”.
“On the pitch he is a phenomenon,” Messi told Marca, as per BR in 2018. He has all the opportunity to do what he wants. He can be one of the best.”
Messi on Dembele: Tottenham is a better move than Newcastle
Manchester City signed Robinho after their takeover and while he produced moments of magic – he was nowhere near as good as he should have been.
Dembele would be in a similar boat. Newcastle would be better advised to build slowly and progressively – rather than bringing the best in quickly.
So, joining a side pushing for the top six in Tottenham, would see Dembele surrounded by players more on his level.
A front three of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dembele would be frightening. Does Daniel Levy want to match his wages? Who knows.
