Lucas Alario is in the form of his life for Bayer Leverkusen at the moment, just months after being approached by both Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur – who could have signed their very own Luis Suarez.
Alario, 28, admitted this week in an interview with TYC Sports that Leeds tried to sign him in the summer – but only an approach was made to Bayer Leverkusen. It comes after his agent told TNT that Tottenham asked about the Argentine.
“They [Leeds] asked my representative and then the club, but then it didn’t advance much further,” Alario said, on Leeds. His agent, Pedro Aldave, told TNT: “We had the chance of Tottenham who are top, but to watch from the bench, it doesn’t work.”
Leeds and Spurs both made approaches for Alario, then. The powerhouse striker is in the form of his life, netting seven goals in eight appearances for Leverkusen this season – in the absence of new Chelsea ace Kai Havertz.

Indeed, Alario has scored five goals in three games. His form has been electric but it could be his inspiration that is finally coming good – Leeds and Tottenham could have signed their very own Luis Suarez.
As quoted by the Bundesliga’s official website, Alario claimed that after Barcelona beat Alario’s River Plate 3-0 in the 2015 Club World Cup that he wanted to mould his game on Suarez – after the Uruguayan star scored twice.
“After that final in Japan, I watch every Barcelona game to learn from Suarez and follow his movements,” Alario said five years ago. Now, he is finally showing that Suarez-like form – with Leeds and Tottenham ruing their decision not to sign him.
TBR’s view – Alario a good signing?
Tottenham have finally bolstered their ranks in the final third. Harry Kane now has competition in the form of Carlos Vinicius who has joined on a loan-to-buy deal from Benfica – while Gareth Bale has also joined, and can play up front.
Despite his stunning form, Alario is no longer needed at Spurs. If they opt against signing Vinicius permanently next summer then that could change, but Leeds need him more despite the form of Patrick Bamford.
Rodrigo was brought in but is shining in attacking midfield, meaning Bamford has little or no competition up front. Alario, then, would be excellent competition for Bamford and the likelihood is that he would overtake the Englishman at some point.
