Report: Tottenham and Chelsea in mix to sign 'amazing' £77m player; fans can see him in action on Wednesday
Tottenham and Chelsea remain in the mix to sign RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol, although they face competition from Barcelona.
That’s according to TeamTealk anyway, who claim the Catalan giants are in the running to sign Gvardiol. This, despite their early Champions League exit which means their January plans are impacted.
Defender in demand
Gvardiol is widely seen as one of Europe’s top young defenders. He’s been called up by Croatia for the World Cup in Qatar and will feature next Wednesday when they get their campaign underway against Morocco.
Chelsea boss Graham Potter has apparently green lit a deal for the Blues to go all out for Gvardiol. However, Tottenham also hold a long-standing interest in the defender. Spurs have watched the Croatian right from the summer and would be disappointed to see him move to Chelsea or Barca.
TeamTalk cites a report from the Guardian that Chelsea actually made a bid of around £77m for Gvardiol in August. Of course, that offer never materialised.
Since then, Gvardiol has starred for Leipzig once more. The 20-year-old has featured in all but two Bundesliga games and played in wins over Real Madrid, Celtic, and Shakhtar Donetsk in Europe.
TBR’s View: Gvardiol is perfect for Tottenham
Tottenham do need to get themselves a quality operator at centre-half to go with Cristian Romero and Josko Gvardiol appears to have all the tools.
The Croatian could be one of the stars of the tournament in Qatar. At just 20, the sky really is the limit for the young defender, and he’ll be itching to make an impression in the Middle East.
Tottenham, then, will need to act fast to land Gvardiol you feel. With Chelsea already keen and now Barca in the mix, it makes things trickier. However, Conte is a convincing manager and Gvardiol might just fancy the challenge.
