Tottenham ace Paulo Gazzaniga continues to put pressure on manager

Tottenham scraped to a narrow 1-0 win at home to Chelsea on Tuesday night in the first leg of a Carabao Cup semi-final.

Spurs were not at their dazzling best at Wembley in the cup fixture, but fortunately the defence was a brick wall and goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was excellent throughout the contest.

Gazzaniga, who is the club’s second-choice goalkeeper, kept his spot in the cup team and once again impressed.

The 27-year-old made a couple of eye-catching saves against an attack-minded Chelsea and his handling was faultless.

He has surely now thrown down the gauntlet to show he is pushing number one Hugo Lloris fairly close for his position in the team.

Spurs captain and World Cup winner Lloris remains an ever-present in the best XI, but he’s been guilty of some individual errors in the past year and no player should be safe from the axe.

Gazzaniga has now won eight out of eight games he’s been involved in this campaign without putting a foot wrong and his mature performance against Chelsea was another step in the right direction.

The Argentinian shot-stopper certainly looks an authoritative figure that can be trusted and some fans have been calling for him to become the number one.

Mauricio Pochettino’s job as manager now to pick his goalkeeper must be harder than ever and Gazzaniga has surely left him with a major selection headache, but for now it seems like senior option Lloris will continue to get the nod.
