Tottenham ace Harry Winks confirms injury, two England teammates reply

Harry Winks has confirmed to Tottenham Hotspur fans on social media that he has indeed undergone surgery on his groin, coming as a blow ahead of the Champions League semi-finals. Two England teammates have replied.

Prior to the crazy 4-3 loss – but aggregate win – over Manchester City, Winks had played in every one of Spurs’ nine previous Champions League outings, starting seven of them.

It leaves Spurs with six players on the sidelines, but Jan Vertonghen and Moussa Sissoko provided Mauricio Pochettino for some welcome relief by returning to training on Monday.

Winks joins Harry Kane, Serge Aurier and Erik Lamela on the sidelines, posting on both Twitter and Instagram that he is “absolutely gutted”.

Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho – who has been linked with a move to Spurs this season – and Leicester City’s £75million-rated (Telegraph) defender Ben Chilwell replied on Instagram, wishing their England teammate well.

TBR’s view

Losing Winks is a big blow to Spurs, with Victor Wanyama yet to show that he is back to his best since returning from injury. Winks is also much more suited to the Champions League.

He has been excellent form this season, dictating the tempo of play at the base of Spurs’ midfield. Alongside Moussa Sissoko, Winks has been given the freedom to show off his passing.

Now, Pochettino may have to make do with a less-than-100-per-cent Sissoko and Wanyama in the middle, against an Ajax side that are playing with enormous confidence at the moment.
