Tottenham 3-2 Everton: Three things we learnt

Ronald Koeman will need to do more to impress bigger clubs

The Everton manager has been linked with Arsenal and Barcelona during recent days. There is a possibility that vacancies will open up at both clubs this summer and Koeman is one of the names being linked to the two posts. He has done a great job at Everton, stabilising the club after a difficult second half to last season, while his work at Southampton was superb given his best players were sold every summer. However, there are doubts about his ability to take on a bigger club job and some of his flaws were on show this afternoon.

His team selection was odd, as he opted for Gareth Barry to add steel and experience to the midfield. It was always going to be difficult for the veteran to compete with Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, something that he didn’t manage to do. Everton were dominated for the majority of the match and did little to threaten the Tottenham back four. Koeman has always been a manager that opts for safety first and that was his downfall this afternoon. The Toffees had enough quality to go head-to-head with Spurs, but they shied away from doing so. Despite the 3-2 scoreline, it was a limp Everton performance and their manager has to do more in big matches to impress the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona.
