Vincent Janssen continues to struggle in a Tottenham shirt
It was a great opportunity for the Dutchman to stake a claim for more regular minutes, but he once again lacked threat in the final third. He was dispossessed four time during the match and completed only 69% of his passes. Tottenham’s build-up play became a lot slicker after he was withdrawn at 60 minutes. To put his poor performance into perspective, no other player gave the ball away more than the striker and he played only two thirds of the match. His movement showed a player lacking confidence and his only effort was a tame shot straight at Sam Johnstone.
Despite his poor start to life in England, the suggestions that he is a poor man’s Roberto Soldado are harsh and are an indicator of the short-termism that plagues the modern game. He has only been at Tottenham for a matter of months and he is being written off as a flop. Janssen is young and has only played one full level of top flight football before this season. Although he starred for AZ last season, he remains relatively inexperienced and is still learning his trade. He is having to adjust his game to a new country and a different style, therefore he deserves to be given time. The Dutch league is a lesser league, but that doesn’t mean that Janssen’s achievements should be downplayed. He was excellent last season and proven himself on the international stage with four goals in nine Dutch caps. He may fail to turn it around at Spurs, but he deserves more time.
