Alasdair Gold has told the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast that Spurs midfielder Oliver Skipp has been impressing in training.

The 22-year-old Tottenham talent returned at the end of August following an injury-plagued six months.

He missed the final four months of 2021-22 with a pubis injury which resulted in him having to undergo surgery.

Skipp initially returned in pre-season for Spurs, only to sustain a hairline fracture in his heel.

While he hasn’t had any injury issues since returning in August, he has struggled for minutes.

Skipp has started three games in all competitions for Tottenham, and has clocked up just 215 minutes overall this term.

With the World Cup in full swing, Spurs training sessions currently consist of those players not in Qatar.

Skipp is one of those who has stayed behind, and according to Gold, he’s been doing really well.

“Similar for Oliver Skipp. He’s a real Conte favourite,” said the football.london Tottenham correspondent.

“He really likes him, but I don’t think he’s done enough since coming back from injury to push his claim.

“A bit like Matt Doherty, he’s another one who is trying to work his way back to full fitness.

“But from everything I hear he’s kind of topping the charts in the fitness stuff in training most of the time.

“I think it’s a sharpness thing as well and being played in the right position.

“He is one of those where I hope they don’t consider loaning him in January.”

On the right track

Skipp has often been touted as a future star for Tottenham, potentially even a future captain.

Therefore, it’s really sad to see him not only missing out on so much game time, but also struggle to return to his top levels.

You can’t help but wonder how Skipp would’ve progressed had he not been out with injuries. Who knows, he might’ve even been a shout for England in Qatar.

Nonetheless, it’s good to hear he’s impressing in training, hopefully he continues on the right track and soon starts staking a claim for regular starts.
