Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been quoted by Sky Sports as saying that Manchester United teenager Angel Gomes will leave Old Trafford this summer – with reported interest from Arsenal.
Gomes, who turns 20 in August, is set to see his contract expire on Tuesday. He is considered one of the brightest talents in Manchester United’s reserve side, and has already played 10 times at senior level in all competitions.
The Daily Mail claimed earlier this summer that Arsenal were monitoring the England Under-20 international’s situation – but face competition from the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Inter Milan.
Asked about his future just 24 hours before his contract expires, Solskjaer stated that he had not heard anything about a new deal for Gomes in the last couple of days and expects the young attacker to leave the club.
“I’ve not heard from him last night or this morning so it seems like they haven’t managed to agree anything. The answer is probably short – yes,” Solskjaer said, when asked if Gomes would be leaving Old Trafford.
TBR’s view – Arsenal have got to move quickly
Landing Gomes would be a huge coup for the Gunners, and one that looks likely. The 19-year-old winger was born in London, and a return home is likely to entice the youngster.
But the lure of a move to Borussia Dortmund, where Jadon Sancho has shone since swapping England for the Bundesliga, is likely to tempt Gomes. Arsenal must move quickly, but signing Gomes would be an excellent move.
