Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United- December 2012
By now the Derby was a battle between two genuine title contenders, and this win at the Etihad put a Robin Van Persie inspired United six points clear of defending champions City. The Dutchman’s £24 million move from Arsenal that summer was arguably what proved the difference in the title race, and he popped up with a champagne moment here. A Wayne Rooney double in the first half saw the visitors race into a 2-0 lead, before Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta were on target in a spirited City fightback.
With the game delicately poised in injury time the league’s most prolific marksman, van Persie swept in a free kick with his trusty left foot that dipped into the far corner away from Joe Hart’s grasp. United were firmly in command of the title race, and it was moments like that for which van Persie was bought. The only question is whether the goal caused greater pain to City or Arsenal fans.
