Manchester United 1-1 Manchester City- April 2001
No local Derby would be complete without some controversy and needle, and few feuds were as toxic as that between Roy Keane and Alf-Inge Haaland. Haaland had stood over Keane, crumpled on the turf with a knee ligament injury, and told him to get up (plus a few other bits of Anglo-Saxon) during a game between Man United and Leeds at Elland Road some years previously. Keane was out for revenge and exacted it with one of the most notorious tackles in domestic football.
The Irishman smashed into Haland with a violent knee-high challenge. The story goes that Haaland was forced to retire after Keane’s assault, but that is not true. He actually finished this game, and that knee was already giving him problems as you can see by the strapping he was wearing in this game. Keane threw a few expletives in the Norwegian’s direction, all of which can be found in one of his several autobiographies. Haland did retire two years later, and his career is remembered for this tackle more than anything else.
