Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United- May 2012
Several Derbies may have been more entertaining than this one, but none have been quite so significant. Vincent Kompany’s first-half header gave City a 1-0 win that drew them level on points with United but with a superior goal difference, meaning that two more wins would see them crowned Premier League champions. City vanquishing their local rivals with the title on the line was arguably a better performance than their 6-1 win at Old Trafford earlier in the same season.
It was a game of few chances, but City were the more industrious and enterprising of the teams and deserved their victory. Knowing that a point would keep the title race in their own hands, United were perhaps guilty of excessive caution; Sir Alex Ferguson kept Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov on the bench that night. Wayne Rooney operated as a lone striker, but Joe Hart was rarely troubled. History will always remember Sergio Aguero’s stoppage time goal against QPR on the final day, but without this Derby win such an iconic moment would never have been possible.
