Following reports in the Mirror suggesting La Liga giants Real Madrid have given Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea a May deadline to make up his mind on a return to Spain, naturally, concern has been rife among the Red Devils’ fan-base.
It is alleged that Bernabeu officials are pushing for an a definitive answer from the Old Trafford ‘number 1’, who has established himself as somewhat of a hero during his stay in the North West, and a potential summer exit would leave manager, Jose Mourinho, picking up the pieces.
Having made 26 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils this season, De Gea holds the joint-second highest number of clean sheets (10), level with Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris, and three fewer than Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois. Widely regarded as one of (if not) the best shot-stoppers in the English top flight, he would be a significant loss for his Portuguese head coach.
With this in mind, the key concern for the Old Trafford faithful is, who will fill De Gea’s boots if he does, indeed, decide to leave for Real Madrid? Below is The United Stand’s top five potential replacements for the Spaniard, should he choose to swap Manchester for his native capital during the summer transfer window.
