John Stones
Erratic recently for Everton? Yes. Undoubtedly one of the most exciting defensive talents in the game at present? Also yes. While criticism of Stones’ recent performances isn’t completely out of order, with a lot of improving to do until he reaches his potential, signing for a Guardiola-led Manchester City could well prove the change needed to fast-track Stones to an undisputed starting position at international level, as well as shunt his development forward.
Stones’ current situation seems almost reminiscent of that of Jerome Boateng – himself formerly of Manchester City – who, upon Guardiola’s arrival in Munich, was a hugely talented but often error-prone centre back who definitely deserved a spot at a big club but needed to prove himself more to become an undisputed starter. Within a year, Boateng had become hugely consistent and was one of Germany’s standout players in the World Cup in 2014, and is now arguably Bayern’s key player when it comes to building play from the back. He’ll be sorely missed during Guardiola’s final six months in southern Germany.
Stones has all the technical and physical attributes to become a key part of a Guardiola side and at just 21 years of age, is also certainly a player whose overall career would benefit from such a move.
