Julian Weigl
Arguably an even more tantalising prospect than Pogba because of the style of his game and his even more tender years, Julian Weigl; aged just 20, has over the course of six months gone from a somewhat unheralded transfer from a lower league club; 1860 Munich, to a key part of Borussia Dortmund’s midfield under their new coach Thomas Tuchel. Guardiola is understood to be a huge admirer of Weigl, which is really only a natural reaction to having seen Weigl play.
Comfortable on the ball and with consistently excellent passing displays at the foot of Dortmund’s midfield, it is very easy to foresee Weigl playing excellently as part of a Guardiola team. His accuracy is in fact often higher than 90% despite being easily one of the players most frequently on the ball in a high pressure area of the pitch. Guardiola of course, is the man who brought Sergio Busquets; arguably the current best defensive midfielder in the world, to top level football. Pep also has a track record of coveting players with skill at dispersing the ball, converting Philipp Lahm into a defensive midfielder in his first season at Bayern and subsequently stemming the decline of Xabi Alonso’s career.
A stumbling block would perhaps be the fee. Weigl is arguably even more indispensable to Dortmund than fellow midfielder Ilkay Gündogan, who the club have clung to doggedly in transfer debates over the past few years, and with a contract which runs until 2019 there really is no reason for Weigl to feel pressured to leave the Signal-Iduna-Park any time soon. Perhaps though, a huge financial package would tempt Dortmund, and a transfer would transform the current City midfield without question.
