As the man in the enviable position of playing for most of the year behind the superb pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, you could be forgiven for thinking that Hugo Lloris has not had to perform to a high level this season. However, Spurs’ captain and the French international has certainly played his part in the North Londoner’s sustained challenge for honours and on several occasions, has pulled off big saves at crucial moments in matches that have shaped the destiny of the game.
Although not obviously contributing to the implementation of Pochettino’s high pressing style, the system would simply not be the same without one of Lloris’ defining attributes. The Frenchman holds a notoriously high starting position when his side are in possession; like Manuel Neuer, and is therefore in a prime position to sweep up behind the defence. Terrific speed across the ground for a goalkeeper helps him out here, and the compressed space in behind Spurs’ defence accentuates the efforts of the outfield players for the White Hart Lane outfit.
