3. Dimitri Payet (France) – 50/1
Arguably the player of the season in the Premier League, it would be a massive injustice if Payet was not awarded a starting place in one of the strongest French sides seen in years. Not only a fantastic source of defence splitting passes, he also has an excellent eye for goal, especially from set pieces.
A 20-25 yard free-kick is essentially the same as a penalty if the West Ham United midfielder is standing over the ball, and if he manages to convert only a handful of free-kicks, we could see Payet jostling for a place at the top of the goal-scoring list.
Although three goals in 18 international appearances isn’t exactly exemplar form, he will be a force to be reckoned with should he be given a chance in the CAM position.
2. Ivan Perisic (Croatia) – 150/1
Often overlooked as the key midfield mystro in favour of Luka Modric or his namesake Rakitic, Ivan Perisic is equally; or arguably more, crucial to the success of the Croatian national team.
A startling six goals in nine qualifying matches for Ante Cacic’s side is enough to turn anyone’s head, with valiant contributions from any place in the midfield. Although one would probably consider Mario Mandzukic as the main goalscoring threat, Perisic has consistently proved that he is one of Europe’s most dangerous, attacking forwards.
A lack of form in recent months from the Juventus striker Mandzukic also means that Perisic will be the main outlet for goals and assists.
1. Artem Dzyuba (Russia) – 66/1
Let’s face it, England will fail in this tournament in spectacular fashion… and with the likes of Slovakia and Wales not in the greatest vein of form, Russia could potentially see an opportunity to progress far in the competition. Their outcome will depend heavily on the form of freescoring Artem Dzyuba.
Eight goals in qualifying and a further six in the Champions League last season is world class. Full stop. One should not pay too much attention to his Euro record however, as over 50% of his goals came against Liechtenstein.
Nevertheless, a one in two goal ratio for Zenit St Petersburg in the 2015-2016 campaign represents excellent value, considering he was a free transfer acquisition from Spartak Moscow last summer. At 6’4, expect Dzyuba to bully weak defences and battle for anything and everything airborne.
