Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

This coming season is a crucial one for Oxlade-Chamberlain’s Arsenal career, though that statement is a truism that could have been applied in any of the last three summers.

Arsene Wenger still had faith that Chamberlain can overcome the injury problems and identity crises that have held him back. Should the two parties decide to part, there would be no shortage of suitors and one imagines that Ronald Koeman would be close to the front of the queue.

At his best, Chamberlain is close to the complete attacking player; fast, bullishly strong, two-footed and capable of dribbling past opponents at will. He can play on either flank or through the middle, and his best position is probably as one of a central midfield three.

Unfortunately, he has a self-critical streak that seems to hold him back. Too often, Chamberlain appears to be suffering from a paralysis-by-analysis; engaging his conscious mind on the pitch when trusting his instincts would serve him better.

His numbers are also distinctly underwhelming. In the last two Premier League seasons, Chamberlain has contributed just two goals and one assist. The human eye indicates that there is a serious talent waiting to explode, but such statistics are damning.
