Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing up a potential move to make Mauricio Pochettino their new manager once a Saudi-backed takeover of the club is completed.
According to ESPN, the Argentine is one of four big names on a shortlist of potential future Tottenham managers.
His appointment would certainly please one former Newcastle player who never truly got a shot at St James’ Park.
Aleksandar Mitrovic joined Newcastle in 2015 and became something of a cult hero among the Newcastle fans.
However, he never won over his managers, including Rafa Benitez, with the pair seemingly incompatible despite an apparently amicable relationship.
Mitrovic has since moved on, joining Fulham in a reported (Guardian) £27 million deal and has been in fine form at Craven Cottage. But he still loves Newcastle and would clearly love to see his former club employ Pochettino.
Speaking to Serbian paper Novosti in 2016, Mitrovic admitted wanting Spurs to win the Premier League title under Pochettino.
“Honestly, I want Tottenham to win the title.
“I like the principle of pushing their young players, and the coach Pochettino is excellent.”
Mitrovic, of course, is not the only one who would love to see Pochettino take over at Newcastle.
Whoever does get the inevitable job opening from Steve Bruce at St James’ Park will have a huge task on their hands and Pochettino has the ability to live up to expectations.
Mitrovic clearly thinks so.
