Eric Dier was a brilliant form for Tottenham Hotspur in a training ground match before the start of the season.

Goalscoring form

Dier is not typically associated with getting on the scoresheet, given that he has hit just 11 goals for Spurs in 279 appearances.

But at Hotspur Way yesterday he managed to show some finishing prowess that even Harry Kane would have been proud of.

Dier scored his first two goals in the training ground match after getting on the end of back post crosses.

But it was his hat-trick strike was really caught the eye, as he bent the ball into the far corner from a fair way out.

Dier to start?

Dier actually does have a fairly solid shooting technique from distance, and has been known to take free-kicks on occasion for Spurs and England.

His performance in the training ground game may just have helped to convince Nuno to start him on opening day.

With Cristian Romero likely to be ruled out with injury, it seems Dier is almost certain to start at centre-back for Tottenham.

It is not yet known who will accompany him in the heart of Spurs’ defence.

But against the class of City on Sunday, it is likely that Dier will have to show more of the defensive side of his game than the attacking one, like he did in training.
