Tony Watt responds to reports Rangers could bring in Russell Martin

Russell Martin is among the potential contenders to take over at Rangers, after Steven Gerrard swapped Ibrox for Aston Villa. Tony Watt responded to those reports, backing Martin’s credentials.

Martin, 35, has played for Rangers. He joined Rangers on loan from Norwich City during the second half of 2017-18, managing just 17 appearances in that time. The veteran scored once for Rangers.

The Mirror claim Rangers have made an enquiry to bring Martin back to the club, but as manager. This is, after impressing at MK Dons before moving to Swansea in the summer, replacing Steve Cooper.

Martin has won eight of his 20 Swansea matches in charge, as he looks to instill his Ajax-style total football philosophy. He has drawn five, and lost seven others of those 20 games.

Ex-Celtic striker Watt responded to reports that Rangers could look to bring Martin back to the club he played for 17 times. The current Motherwell striker backed a potential move, on Twitter.

Watt on Martin: Is he a big enough name for Rangers, to replace Gerrard?

Unfortunately for Martin, probably not. While his ethos, his approach to football is correct – he lacks the name and experience to shine at Rangers. Gerrard proved that a big calibre is needed.

Other names linked with the job are more-suited, too. Giovanni van Bronckhorst remains the front runner, and the 46-year-old would be absolutely perfect – because he is a massive name.

His trophy-laden career, combined with three years at Rangers and 200 games in management already – almost double Martin’s experience – makes van Bronckhorst ideal. Much more so, than Martin.
