Tony Dorigo claims Leeds star Kalvin Phillips is the best in his position in the Premier League

Tony Dorigo has made the bold claim that Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips is the best player in the Premier League in his position.

The 24-year-old is a deep-lying midfielder that played a key role in Leeds’ promotion from the Championship and he’s found it relatively comfortable stepping up to the top-flight.

Despite his lack of top level experience, he’s already earned three senior international caps for England and has had quite a rapid rise in the past few months.

Phillips, who earns £30,000-a-week (Mirror), is a defensive midfielder that anchors the backline so well with the way he breaks up play and drops in as a third centre-back when needed.

He’s also instrumental for the Yorkshire giants when in possession, as he’s got a superb range of passing to his game and helps set the tone.

Dorigo has given the Leeds-born midfielder a huge compliment by ranking him as the division’s best in his deeper midfield role.

“It’s great have him back, it just feels so much more solid,” Dorigo told LUTV.

“He just makes such a difference. He really can pick up the right positions at the right time, he’s that insurance policy at the back. He’s learned that position really well… this position is made for him. I think he’s the best at that position in the Premier League.

TBR’s View:

Phillips may have made an excellent start to his Premier League career, but putting him at the top of the pile in terms of defensive midfielders is massively over the top.

He’s a player that continues to go from strength to strength at Elland Road and there’s a big drop off when he’s not in Marcelo Bielsa’s XI, which is why further down the line he may deserve to be in the category with the very best.

But the likes of Fabinho, N’Golo Kante, Allan, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodri are all more established players that have performing in the top division for far longer.
