Tony Cottee hails recent ‘stunning’ performance from West Ham 28-year-old
Tony Cottee has given huge credit to Manuel Lanzini for his individual performance in West Ham’s previous game.
The Hammers recored a vital 2-1 away victory at Burnley on Monday in the Premier League, which keeps them firmly in the hunt to finish in the Champions League positions this season.
Michail Antonio, who was returning from a hamstring injury, was his usual dominant self by scoring two goals.
However, club legend Cottee has picked out Lanzini as someone who shined earlier in the week.
Lanzini made his first start in the league for David Moyes’ side since February, and dropped into an unfamiliar deeper central midfield position.
The £70,000-a-week (Spotrac) playmaker is used to being further up the pitch trying to create in pockets of space, but he looked a natural fit in the centre of the park helping to dictate play.
“The entire team played well at Burnley on Monday night and, although he may not have grabbed all the headlines, I thought that Manuel Lanzini put in a stunning performance,” Cottee said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
“For me, he excelled in that deeper central midfield position alongside Tomáš Souček, where he gave our defenders a fantastic, alternative option to play the ball out from the back.”
Lanzini, 28, has always been someone extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, so it was impressive to see him play like that in deeper areas.
The Argentine star has really struggled for minutes at the London Stadium this season, but during five years in the Premier League he’s proven that he’s full of individual ability.
There is real competition for places within the Hammers squad, but if they get over the line for European football they’ll need strength in depth next season.
