Tony Cascarino warns Tottenham, compares to West Ham and Alexis Sanchez situations

Tony Cascarino has told TalkSPORT that Tottenham Hotspur should consider dropping contract rebel Christian Eriksen completely from the side, after Arsenal and West Ham made a similar mistake.

Eriksen, 27, was desperate to leave Tottenham in the summer amid reported interest from Real Madrid. However, the TalkSPORT report claims that Real’s interest was never enough to constitute a move away from north London.

The Danish star has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Spurs, joining Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen who are also set to see their contracts expire at the end of the season. Eriksen has struggled to have an impact this season.

He only played as a substitute on Saturday during the 2-1 loss to Leicester. Cascarino is worried for Tottenham. He feels Eriksen’s situation could mirror Marko Arnautovic’s situation at West Ham, and Alexis Sanchez’s saga at Arsenal.

“I’m never a fan of managers choosing players who are in the final year of their contract or have had their heads turned to go for a move,” Cascarino said. “I’ll give you two examples. One was Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal.

“His final year at Arsenal was so below par compared to his previous season. “Another one was Marko Arnautovic at West Ham. When he had his head turned by China last January he was a non-event between January and the end of the season.”

TBR’s view – Cascarino is right, but do Spurs have other options?

With injuries to new signings Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon, Tottenham have little cover in attack.

Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura and Eriksen are the options at the moment. But other than that, Spurs have little to offer to support Harry Kane. Cascarino is right, but Spurs might be forced into using Eriksen.
