Tony Cascarino believes Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish needs to improve the defensive side of his game, according to the Times.
Grealish notched a goal and an assist as Villa scooped a much-needed victory against Burnley yesterday but Cascarino has encouraged him to go on to work on the other side of the game.
He said: “Jack Grealish is the heart of Aston Villa… but there is one important ingredient in his game that needs development. Grealish is given the freedom by Villa to be creative without having to worry about the defensive side of the game. He is not the best tackler and offers little protection.
“Think of Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo and David Silva. The most gifted midfielders are still expected to pull their weight defensively. De Bruyne is the Premier League’s most creative player but how often do you see him winning the ball back for Manchester City? The next step for Grealish is to improve the ugly side of his game.”
TBR’s View – Grealish willing to do dirty work but Villa need him free as possible
Grealish loves Villa and will do whatever he can to keep them in the Premier League. He is more than willing to muck in for Dean Smith’s side.
But Smith needs his talisman to be as free as possible. That’s how he will best help the team as the season goes along.
If Grealish makes a move to the Champions League one day or becomes an England regular, that other side of his game will become ever more important.
