Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has criticised Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu for his performance in the Hornets’ 2-0 defeat against Wolves on Saturday.
The former Everton man was hooked at half time and Cascarino has suggested that he may not have the stomach for the relegation fight ahead.
As per the Times, Cascarino said: “Gerard Deulofeu is the most gifted member of Watford’s squad – capable of scaring the life out of defenders. Deulofeu did not pull his weight at Wolves. He was never in the game and was pulled off at half-time.
“Everyone knows how dangerous Deulofeu can be but given Watford’s perilous position, they can ill afford a player who does not turn up. Quique Sánchez Flores needs players who are up for the fight.”
TBR’s View – Will Flores go back to basics?
The temptation for any manager involved in a relegation dogfight is to go back to basics; packing the team with hard workers from whom you know exactly what you’re going to get, even if the quality isn’t the highest.
On the evidence on Saturday, if Flores is going to do that, Deulofeu will not be a part of the team. But the Spaniard is also capable of magic, which can prove invaluable in the lower reaches of the table.
Someone like Danny Welbeck may well get the nod more often as a willing runner who always puts in a shift. It’ll be interesting to see what Flores’ blueprint for getting out of trouble is and how much Deulofeu is involved.
