Joe Gomez held an inexperienced Liverpool defence together in their 1-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton yesterday.
Jurgen Klopp made plenty of changes, but Gomez was the one constant on an afternoon where the Reds humiliated their bitter rivals by beating them with a third-string side.
And Tony Cascarino in the Times was full of praise for Gomez, saying: “There is no stopping Liverpool and one of the unsung heroes of their charge towards honours is Joe Gomez. Returned from injury, the defender is back to his best. I predict a massive year for him.
When he was sidelined through injury Joël Matip and Dejan Lovren got in front of him in the pecking order. Not any more. He is so quick, so strong and getting better on the ball. His one and two-touch play is beginning to rival Van Dijk’s. I believe Gomez will be celebrating being the regular starting centre back with Harry Maguire for England at Euro 2020.”
TBR’s View – England starting spot should be Gomez’s to lose
On current form, Gomez is the best English centre back in the country. It is Maguire who should be sweating on his place, but injuries suffered by Tyrone Mings and John Stones have eased the pressure on the Manchester United man.
If Gomez keeps his place in the Liverpool team until the end of the season – and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t if he stays fit – then he should definitely be starting for England when Euro 2020 kicks off.
