Tony Cascarino impressed with five Arsenal players after 1-0 win
Arsenal finally produced a performance befitting of their wonderful supporters at the weekend. They beat Burnley 1-0 and Tony Cascarino has praised five players for their efforts in his column for The Times.
The former Tottenham player produces a weekly piece on the weekend’s football in Monday’s paper. Arsenal have come in for criticism after a poor start, but they were praised for Saturday’s showing.
A free-kick by Martin Odegaard was enough to give the Gunners a win. It was their second Premier League win of the campaign after Norwich were despatched last weekend.
Cascarino felt that Mikel Arteta got things spot on against a Burnley side who have done pretty well against Arsenal in the past.
He told The Times (Print Edition; The Game supplement, page 7): “Mikel Arteta got his tactics spot on. He set up with a 4-1-4-1 formation, which was in practice an attacking five and a defensive five.
“The defensive group – Takehiro Tomiyasu, Ben White, Gabriel and Kieran Tierney, with Thomas Partey in front of them – were well-organised and disciplines and completely shut out Burnley.”
Progress – Lots to like about Arsenal but still work to do
After beating Norwich and Burnley each by the odd goal, to say the Gunners have turned a corner would be a stretch. It is, however, six massive points collected by Arsenal since the international break.
Tomiyasu looks like a great signing already, whilst keeping Tierney fit looks to be integral to Arsenal’s fortunes.
Partey needs a big season during 2021/22. He struggled with injuries last term and the Ghanian needs to start justifying his valuation.
Cascarino is right to suggest that Arteta played a blinder though. The Spaniard must now go on a run and get the Gunners back on track towards the higher echelons of the division.
