Tony Cascarino has stated that Eric Dier is now playing his best ever football at Tottenham, as well as insisting the debate is now over regarding what his best position is.
The 26-year-old spent a large part of his Spurs career in the centre of the park as a defensive midfielder and at times thrive in that role under former boss Mauricio Pochettino, but the versatile star was dropped into the backline following the appointment of Jose Mourinho.
Spurs’ Portuguese manager has preferred the powerhouse as a centre-back ever since, which has helped him to become a regular starter in the side and also reignite his career as an England international.
His levels certainly had dipped as a midfielder, but he now looks extremely confident in the heart of defence and is delivering consistent performances.
Pundit Cascarino has applauded Dier for the way he’s turned around his career after a mini blip:
“He really lost his way at Tottenham. The fans and most of us in the media would talk about this, is he a midfielder or is he a centre-back?” he told talkSPORT.
“I think that debate has now ended because of his performances at centre-half and the manager has chose to play him in that position.
“His performances have said everything about him this year. He’s playing the best football I’ve seen him, certainly at Spurs.”

TBR’s View:
Dier has all the traits needed to be a top centre-back, including his strength, aerial threat, reading of the game and ball-playing qualities.
He’s certainly still trying to master the role and it helps having experience alongside him at Spurs like Toby Alderweireld, but it looks like he could be a long-term option there and he’s certainly a big favourite of Mourinho.
Spurs considered just one goal in the three Premier League games before the international break with Dier in the heart of defence and he continues to improve in that position.
