Tony Cascarino and Jamie Redknapp endorse Danny Ings for England call-up

Tony Cascarino and Jamie Redknapp have both backed Southampton hitman Danny Ings for an England call-up for the March internationals.

Ings continued his hot form with the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Saturday and Harry Kane’s injury opens up a spot in the Three Lions squad.

In the Times, Cascarino said: “Ings hit the bar twice, was a nuisance, a constant threat. Gareth Southgate has to call him up to the England squad. He has scored ten goals in his past 11 games and he constantly causes havoc. If you go on form, Ings is a shoo-in for England in their friendlies against Italy and Denmark in the last week of March.”

Redknapp added in the Daily Mail: “Danny Ings. Keep going at this rate and how could Gareth Southgate not select the 27-year-old for England’s March friendlies? Harry Kane is sidelined until April and Jamie Vardy may decide to stand by his decision to retire internationally. Ings could be a fine option off the bench for England.”

TBR’s View – Even once Kane’s back, there should be one striking spot free for Ings this summer

Provided there are no complications in his recovery, Kane will captain England this summer. Marcus Rashford and Tammy Abraham are also shoo-ins from the looks of things, but Callum Wilson has been in the setup as a backup striker for a while now.

Wilson’s form has tailed off badly as Bournemouth have slipped down the Premier League. It’s a battle between him and Ings for that final striking spot as it stands, and the Saints man wins hands down on current form.

If Jamie Vardy was still in contention, Ings might have found himself squeezed out, but Wilson’s poor season hands him a huge opportunity, if he can stay fit.
