Tony Cascarino admits he’s worried by Alisson Becker as Liverpool chase Man City

Talksport pundit and former Republic of Ireland striker, Tony Cascarino, has doubted whether Liverpool can challenge Manchester City due to their defensive issues and, in particular, goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Liverpool have only conceded 13 goals in the Premier League this season, giving them the third best defensive record in the league behind City and Chelsea. Jurgen Klopp signed Ibrahima Konate in the summer, while Virgil van Dijk has also returned to the fold.

However, despite being second and only conceding those goals, Cascarino believes City will still take some catching and he called out goalkeeper Alisson for being more error prone this term.

“They’re a tad short of City. I’m a little bit concerned about Alisson. I think he’s been hot and cold. When he’s good, he’s a brilliant goalkeeper,” Cascarino said on Talksport.

“When he keeps the basics of his game and simplifies it. When he overplays he’s liable to mistakes. I’ve seen a number of mistakes this season. He’s a great goalkeeper. But I just feel he’s a bit more prone to an error than what Ederson is at City.”

Liverpool take on Tottenham today looking to continue their momentum of late. A win in midweek over Newcastle ensured they moved three points clear of Chelsea in third.

TBR’s View: Alisson Is World Class, Liverpool Needn’t Worry

While Cascarino makes a point about Ederson, there is still no doubt that Alisson Becker is one of the very best goalkeepers in world football.

Yes, he’s made a couple of errors and looked shaky at times, but he is still capable and makes a lot of hard things look easy in the goal.

Put it this way, if Alisson was injured, Liverpool would be a far worse team for it. And that, in itself, says a lot about how good and important he is to the cause.
