Tony Adams has told Stadium Astro that he believes Arsenal need a midfielder like Aston Villa’s Brazilian maestro Douglas Luiz, ahead of the summer transfer window which opens in just five days.

Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on Tuesday night despite coming into the match off the back of sensational wins over Premier League champions Liverpool – and an FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City.

Trezeguet’s goal was the difference but a number of Villa players impressed, including Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Jack Grealish and 22-year-old Luiz. The Brazilian has gained plenty of plaudits since the restart.

A £15million (BBC) signing from Manchester City last summer, Luiz has clocked up 41 appearances for Villa this term and Gunners legend Adams reckons Arsenal need a midfielder similar to that of the Brazil Under-23 ace.

“We need a holding midfield player like Douglas Luiz,” Adams said. “Maybe a bit stronger and a bit taller, like a Gilberto or a Manu Petit. We are crying out for stability and resilience.”

TBR’s view – Is Luiz good enough for Arsenal?

If his performances since the restart are anything to go by, then yes. He has arguably been Villa’s best player, keeping Dean Smith’s men in with a chance of achieving Premier League safety.

The Villans took a huge leap towards avoiding the drop on Tuesday night and Luiz was a crucial part of that, nullifying the impact of Joe Willock and Dani Ceballos. Yes, his combative edge is just what the Gunners need.
