Arsenal legend Tony Adams has explained to Stadium Astro how Nicolas Pepe proved him wrong against Leicester City on Sunday.
The Ivorian has been growing in confidence in recent weeks and his efforts were rewarded yesterday with a goal during the 3-1 win.
David Luiz and Alexandre Lacazette also netted for the Gunners but it was Pepe who caught the eye of Adams.
The former centre-back has been critical of the £72 million star in the past but he was firmly supportive of his performance against the Foxes.
He told Stadium Astro: “I have been critical. Why did we need this player in the first place? Massive price tag. £72 million and especially when we have good kids coming through
“Hopefully, he has put my criticism to bed, you know. He has put a performance in, and that’s what he needs to give himself a little bit of a spark.
“The longer it goes in the Europa League, he is going to get more opportunities to play, gain confidence and who knows, next season he could be an exceptional player for us.”
TBR View: Pepe starting to showcase his talents at Arsenal
The winger is clearly a player who needs confidence and he appears to be getting in the groove under Arteta’s management.
Pepe was signed on the back of a quality 2018/19 campaign where he scored 23 goals and registered 12 assists for Lille.
He can clearly play and the £100,000-a-week player is slowly but surely starting to prove himself.
The challenge for Pepe is to become more consistent and the more games he plays the quicker he will accomplish that.
Adams is being won over and plenty of supporters will start to feel the same if he continues to shine.
Arteta has done well to instil some confidence into his players and Pepe is one player clearly reaping the benefits of his methods.
