Iconic former defender Tony Adams has told Stadium Astro that Steve Bould has told him that Mikel Arteta is the governor at Arsenal.

The under-23 boss was a former teammate Adams with the pair forming a legendary central defensive pairing in the nineties.

Adams was a one-club man during his career, playing 672 times for the Gunners with many supporters seeing him as the club’s best-ever performer.

He helped Arsenal to two First Division titles, two Premier League titles, three FA Cup wins and lifted the League Cup twice; he also lifted the European Cup Winners’ Cup during the 1993/94 campaign.

Now, Arteta is the man tasked with trying to bring the glory days back to the Gunners.

He has already overseen an FA Cup victory, with Arsenal beating Chelsea in last season’s final.

Adams has praised Arteta and says Bould has been raving about the Spaniard.

He told Stadium Astro: “He has got fantastic ability to work with this team. He puts hours in on the training pitch and he’s his own man. If Ozil isn’t in his thinking, he’s out, it’s as simple as that. I can’t speak highly enough of the guy.

“The words coming out of the club, when I talk to my mate Steve Bould, who’s still in the club taking the under-23s at the moment, he said to me: ‘This guy has got it all, he’s the governor’.

“He’s the best he’s seen in a long time. He really does understand the game, he expresses himself; he’s very confident. It’s his first job and he’s doing a remarkable, remarkable job.”

TBR View – Arteta in for the long-haul

Arteta is coming up to a year in charge of the Gunners and it’s been a decent start in fairness.

Few would have predicted them to win the FA Cup last year, beating Manchester City and Chelsea to lift the trophy.

Arsenal won’t have taken any pride in sacking Arsene Wenger’s predecessor after a short amount of time.

It now looks like a stroke of genius and in Arteta, they have a man who is in for the long-haul.

He cares about the club, his recruitment has been pretty much spot on and under Arteta, there is real optimism that the Gunners can return to the Champions League.
