Tony Adams names the Liverpool player who endured a really ‘rough night’ against Newcastle

Liverpool dropped points for the first time in a long time as they drew 3-3 with Newcastle on Wednesday evening.

The Merseyside club had won five league games in a row before their draw with the Magpies, and, as the scoreline suggests, defending was a problem on the evening.

Indeed, this was the first time Liverpool had conceded three goals in a game under Arne Slot, and there was a bit of disjointment in the backline.

Joe Gomez got a rare start for Liverpool against Newcastle, but, unfortunately, the England international wasn’t at his best on the night.

Speaking on Premier League Productions after the game, Tony Adams noted that Gomez had a rough night at St James’ Park, claiming that Liverpool looked a lot better when Trent Alexander-Arnold came on.

Gomez has been praised by Arne Slot recently, but he wasn’t at his best here.

Joe Gomez had a rough night vs Newcastle

Adams shared his verdict on Gomez’s performance against the Magpies.

The pundit says that Liverpool started slowly, and that Gomez wasn’t brilliant during the time he was on the pitch.

“Yeah, Liverpool started very slowly, they came out in the second-half, but Joe Gomez, he had a particularly rough night Joe, but the substitution changed the game, then there was the late equaliser,” Adams said.

Joe Gomez’s stats vs Newcastle

Adams says that Gomez had a rough night against Newcastle, and he’s not wrong.

Indeed, Gomez barely provided anything during this game in terms of defensive actions.

The centre-back position is so important to this Liverpool team, but Gomez didn’t have much of a positive affect on the game.

Gomez didn’t make a single tackle during this match, nor did he make an interception. Simply put, he was quite anonymous while playing against a team that was attacking in waves at times.

Ibrahima Konate has received massive praise recently in his role as centre-back at Liverpool, but, sadly, Gomez couldn’t replicate Konate’s recent performances here.

Gomez is still a fantastic player who provides a lot of depth in this Liverpool backline, but against Newcastle, the £85k-a-week defender didn’t have his finest hour.
