Tony Adams claims breakthrough Arsenal star could save the club a lot of money
Tony Adams has told Stadium Astro that he believes goalkeeper Emi Martinez could be about to save the club a lot of money, as he reckons the Argentine’s form could make Arsenal re-think spending big on a goalkeeper.
Martinez, 27, has enjoyed his best season at Arsenal since joining the club in 2012 from Independiente as a teenager. He has clocked up 21 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions – despite playing just 14 times beforehand.
Promoted as the club’s number two goalkeeper last summer, Martinez played numerous times in the FA Cup, Europa League and Carabao Cup. He then replaced number one Bernd Leno against Brighton after the restart.
The German suffered a knee injury and it has seen Martinez entrusted between the sticks for Arsenal’s last nine games in all competitions. Adams believes that the Argentine’s form is likely to save the Gunners some money.
“What we’ve missed is a couple of central defenders and a keeper,” Adams said. “We may have found one actually [in Martinez], and saved ourselves a lot of money.”
TBR’s view – Do Arsenal really need a new goalkeeper?
While Martinez could make Arsenal re-think about bringing in a new second goalkeeper – surely the Gunners do not need a new man between the sticks, given Bernd Leno is one of the best in the Premier League?
Yes, there is a leak at the back but that is surely down to the defence. Leno has helped plug the gap, rather than open it up. Martinez is an excellent option – but he may even be tempted to leave after getting a taste of regular football.
