Tony Adams blasts key Arsenal figure for signing of Willian

Arsenal legend Tony Adams has told Stadium Astro that Edu shouldn’t have signed Willian during the summer transfer window.

The club added the player on a free transfer from Chelsea and are paying him £192,000-a-week.

Willian registered three assists on the opening day of the season against Fulham but hasn’t claimed a goal contribution since.

He has proved a pretty poor signing and Adams believes Edu needs to carry the can for the recruitment.

The ex-centre-back told Stadium Astro: “Why have they brought him into the squad? If you have got him just to make the numbers up because he’s got a bit of experience, where are you going with that?

“Edu is very inexperienced and they were heavily reliant on agents to get player into the club. All of a sudden you’ve got Willian, Cedric, all the same agent.

“We have got so many kids coming through, don’t buy these players!

“You spot areas that are weak. You don’t get and get Willian on a three-year contract, that is going nowhere. That is really poor sports directorship.”

TBR View: Adams has a point but Arsenal already learning lessons

The Gunners will probably know that they got the deal to sign the Brazilian horribly wrong.

Indeed, their transfer business since perhaps suggests as much.

Thomas Partey was added on deadline day in the summer and he has so far been brilliant – when he’s not been injured.

He’s very much viewed as a player who can complement a youthful Gunners team for years to come and that bodes well.

This window, Mat Ryan has bolstered the goalkeeping ranks, whilst Martin Odegaard has arrived on loan from Real Madrid.

The Norwegian is viewed as one world football’s top talents and although he’s only on loan it does represent a step in the right direction.

Edu is inexperienced but it would seem with his latest bits of business that he is learning all the time.

The challenge in the summer is to ensure more quality is added and that Arsenal continue to learn from their Willian-sized mistake.
