Arsenal full-back Takehiro Tomiyasu was left shocked in an interview with Spanish outlet AS when learning that Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara was left out of the Spain squad for the World Cup.

Tomiyasu is part of the Japan squad looking to escape from an incredibly tough group in Qatar. The Japanese open their tournament against Germany before facing Costa Rica.

Their final fixture sees the side take on 2010 winners Spain. And ahead of that game, Tomiyasu was asked to pick his favourite player in the Spain squad in a brief interview with AS.

Tomiyasu shocked by Thiago omission

However, the defender went on to suggest Thiago.

He was then visibly shocked when learning that the Liverpool star will not be involved in Qatar after being left out of Luis Enrique’s squad.

Tomiyasu then apologised before admitting that he did not realise that he was not going to be involved in the tournament.

It is remarkable that Thiago has been such a peripheral figure throughout his international career. In fact, the 31-year-old has only made 46 appearances in the 11 years since his debut for Spain.

Of course, the Spanish boasted one of the greatest midfields of all-time in the early stages of Thiago’s time in the team. And they have several amazing prospects coming through the ranks now.

But Thiago is a world-class talent, capable of doing things on the ball that most in world football could only dream of.

He was in Luis Enrique’s preliminary squad ahead of the tournament. However, the Liverpool man did not make the final cut.

With players of his calibre left out, there is certainly now pressure on the Spain squad to go a long way.
