Tom Davies must take EFL Cup chance to stake regular starting place claim
Everton face Lincoln City in the EFL Cup this week and undoubtedly manager Marco Silva will be looking to rotate his team and give fringe players a chance.
In midfield, it seems one decision has already been made for the Portuguese. Jean-Philippe Gbamin is out of action for the next 12 weeks with a thigh injury. The summer signing, who cost a reported £22.5 million (The Guardian) from Mainz will undoubtedly be a big loss.
But it presents a huge opportunity for young Everton midfielder Tom Davies.
The performances of both Morgan Schneiderlin and Andre Gomes this season have left Everton fans fairly disappointed. The pair have struggled and against Aston Villa were largely to blame for a lacklustre performance from the Toffees.
There is a definite lack of energy in the Everton midfield without summer departee Idrissa Gana Gueye and that is where Davies could make a difference.
Of all the players on the Everton bench recently, Davies looks the most likely to get a chance against the League One side this week.
Silva is known to be a fan of the England under-21 international and even handed him the captain’s armband at times last season.
If he can put in a stellar display at Sincil Bank on Wednesday night then the 21-year-old might just be able to force his way into the Everton starting XI for Wolves at the weekend.
