Toby Alderweireld has told Belgian outlet Sporza that he hopes to return to Belgium when his current Tottenham Hotspur contract expires in 2023.

Alderweireld finally put an end to all talk surrounding his future back in December by penning fresh terms with Spurs.

As reported by BBC Sport, his current deal has three years left to run after he had entered the final year of his previous contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But despite only reaching an agreement fairly recently, Alderweireld appears to already have an idea of what his next move will be.

The centre-back suggested that he wants to make a move that would see him follow in the footsteps of Vincent Kompany and return to his home nation – with his family the main motivation behind his plans.

“I am thinking about returning to Belgium afterwards”, he told Sporza.

“Especially for my children, who will then be 3 and 5 years old. My oldest child will then go to primary school and I want to give her a normal childhood. I want to send her to a permanent school for those 6 years of primary school without making her travel. ”

Alderweireld – who earns £80,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – will be 34 by the time his contract comes to an end at Tottenham. So by that stage, it may suit all parties for the former Atletico Madrid man to return to Belgium.

He has the quality to get back to his best and remain a key man for Jose Mourinho’s men during the remaining years of his contract.

And he will be hoping that he can perhaps emulate Kompany in another way by leaving on an incredible high by helping Spurs to win the trophies that they have threatened to lift throughout Alderweireld’s spell.
