Title-holders eye Arsenal raid to sign star Gilberto Silva called ‘fantastic’
Atletico Madrid are showing interest in raiding Arsenal during the January transfer window to sign defender Cedric Soares on a half-season loan deal.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who report the La Liga title-holders are keen to strike a deal after selling Kieran Trippier. The England international completed a £12m transfer to Newcastle United on Friday.
Diego Simeone is now in the market for a new first-choice right-back, having lost his fight to retain Trippier. He had fielded the 31-year-old in 15 of the Colchoneros’ 19 league fixtures, including 12 starting roles.
Atletico Madrid have now set their eyes on Cedric’s situation at Arsenal as they seek a mid-season transfer. The 30-year-old has so far only played 214-minutes in the Premier League this season over four appearances.
Mikel Arteta has also only started the Portuguese twice with opening roles against Chelsea and Manchester City in August. He has only played 34-minutes since losing at the Etihad Stadium and 26-minutes since September.
Arsenal currently unwilling to sanction Atletico Madrid transfer for Cedric
Atletico Madrid are willing to sign Cedric on loan from Arsenal with the view to a permanent transfer this summer. But the Gunners are reluctant to sanction a deal as the £75k-a-week ace is Arteta’s only backup full-back.
Arsenal will want to sign a replacement before granting Cedric a transfer to Atletico Madrid, having let Ainsley Maitland-Niles join Roma on loan. Takehiro Tomiyasu would otherwise be their only option in the position.
Cedric has also allowed Arteta to rest Tomiyasu in cup fixtures with three, full 90-minute Carabao Cup games. He also provided assists against AFC Wimbledon and Sunderland to help reach the semi-finals.
Arsenal are under no pressure to accept Atletico Madrid’s offer of a loan-to-buy transfer for Cedric this month. The 34-cap defender – who Gilberto Silva has called ‘fantastic’ – remains under contract until 2024.
