Tipped by Leeds United fans to thrive this season Mateusz Bogusz has not made breakthrough

At the start of the season, it looked as though Mateusz Bogusz could be in with a chance of playing some regular football at Elland Road this season.

Leeds United snapped up the Polish youngster in a bargain deal last January. It was reported by Przeglad Sportowy that Leeds paid a fee in the region of €200,000 (£172,000) to sign the player, beating competition from Stade de Reims and Brighton.

He was signed as one for the future, but by the end of the season found himself in the matchday squad as Leeds pushed for promotion from the Championship.

Bogusz then went on to have an impressive pre-season, even scoring in a friendly with Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia. He also featured for Poland at the under-20 World Cup and it appeared he might be a potential secret weapon for Leeds this season.

Indeed, the 18-year-old started the season in the first-team squad, sitting on the bench for Leeds’ first four Championship games of the season and featuring in the EFL Cup against Stoke City.

But since then, he has vanished from the first-team picture. Bogusz has not been in a Leeds matchday squad since November.

It simply appears that Bogusz needs more time in the under-23s. His eye-catching set-piece ability and array of passing has made him a firm favourite among Leeds fans but others appear to have moved ahead of him in the pecking order this season.

Robbie Gotts, for example, was given his chance in the FA Cup tie with Arsenal, whilst Bogusz also suffered a month-long absence through injury at the start of the year.

It is a shame Leeds fans have not got to see more of Bogusz. Many tipped him as the potential breakout star for the club this season.

But it is also important to remember he is just 18-years-old. If he can continue to develop and become a player adept at playing Leeds United’s new-found style, then he will surely be in and around the first-team picture before long.
