Times pundit orders Liverpool to sign player that Gerrard branded 'very energetic' earlier this season
Tony Cascarino has said in his Times column that Liverpool should look to replace captain Jordan Henderson – with Aston Villa ace John McGinn.
Henderson, who turns 32 in June, has only recently penned a new contract at Liverpool until the summer of 2025. There was brief talk of an exit.
But he agreed a deal that will see him remain at Anfield until he is past the midway point of his thirties. However, he might be a squad player by then.
Much like James Milner is now, Henderson could be by then. So, Liverpool will have to consider a replacement in the next couple of seasons.
Cascarino, who played for Aston Villa himself, believes Steven Gerrard’s midfield dynamo McGinn would be ideal for Liverpool, as a replacement.
“He would suit the way Liverpool play and make a great replacement for Henderson. Gerrard will know all of this. Hewill do all he can to keep him.”
Cascarino on McGinn: Could Liverpool really go in for Villa ace?
There is no doubt that McGinn would suit Liverpool’s system. Jurgen Klopp is famed for playing a midfield system, that requires hard-working players.
McGinn is that, down to a tee. Much like Gini Wijnaldum was at Liverpool, McGinn would provide the athleticism – but also a goal threat.
Gerrard would do everything he can to keep him, recently being quoted as saying he is: “Bubbly, infectious and very energetic on and off the pitch.”
McGinn would be a stunning signing for Liverpool but the chances of Villa letting him go, given their own financial state, is tiny.
The 27-year-old midfielder would have to fight for a move himself – like Jack Grealish did, to join Manchester City last summer for £100million.
